Why Being Reliable is More Important

Imagine that you have a chance to acquire a new business deal, and the business partner that you have selected has the key details that you need in order for you to submit what you need. You call them and their number is off, you text them but the message delivered is  not seen. You have 2 hours so you think maybe they are caught up in a meeting or they are somewhere but will be back online just now after all you had just talked to them 10 minutes ago. Sadly the two hours pass, your partner is still not reachable and you fail to submit what you needed to submit. Five hours later they come back online and out of concern and frustration you ask why they were offline, to your amazement they tell you, “I decided to switch off the phone because I was feeling low in the office”

So maybe you have a big game to play the next day and you have trained hard with your team mates, the journey has been long and you are really looking forward to it. Your captain is the most talented of the team and plays a pivotal role. You all stroll into the dressing room ready for action and your captain shows up smelling like a party. He has been out all night and only went to bed at 3 am, the game is about to start and he is complaining of his head being dizzy.

You and your buddies decide to take a road trip  which requires you to be early, and one of you is responsible for the car. Two days before the trip you go through the checklist of what needs to be done. So you all agree that everyone will play their part. On the day of the trip you are all early as you are getting picked up at the same spot. And true to his word, your friend shows up with the car looking clean and ready. You all get in and off you go. As you are passing one of the barren lands the car stops and seems to have a fault. You check the front and nothing seems amiss, until one of you notices that there is no fuel. You all know that on a full tank the journey would have been made, arriving and even coming back a quarter of the way. You ask your friend what happened to putting fuel, and he tells you “I thought it best to put the fuel when we arrived at our destination, after all we had a quarter tank full”

It’s school time and you are doing your group assignment. Everyone has a part to play, you are working on 25% of the assignment contribution. Everyone sends you their part as you are responsible for the assignment consolidation. You are feeling pumped and are working on it. You put everything together and promise everyone that the assignment is ready. You are sure you will get 85-95% after all the hard work. You get to class, you show your team mates and they are super excited. As you are waiting your turn to present, your laptop refuses to work and crashes. Your team mates are shocked but you say “Don’t worry guys I made a back up on email and on my flash, we can use your computer” Sure enough you have the presentation on flash and you do your presentation and end up getting  98% for it.

Being reliable is important. It can save the day make a deal and create happiness. It is better to have a bird in hand than two in the bush. One reliable friend is more important than 20 followers who are not reliable. In the time when you need them the most, the friend or business partner who can pick up the phone, answer a text message, wake up in time, prepare ahead, have a back up and just be there is more important than any inheritance that you can ever receive.
