How I handle disappointment, a blogger’s 4 confessions

Estimated read time 3 min read

Sometimes it is a supplier, sometimes it’s a friend, a partner, a child, a boss, an employee or different people who can disappoint you at any time such that you are left wondering what is the point. Each one of us is disappointed once in a while and we are not sure what to do. We all handle disappointment differently depending on the circumstances.

I have learned over time that disappointment will come whether we like it or not. It is not something that we can control, as long as we are alive and are part of society we will disappointed. The difference is how you handle it.

1. Don’t get caught up in the emotion of it

After university  I went for a programming interview with 3 of my friends, despite being  sure that I had aced the interview I was told that I had not made it, despite having successfully aced the practicals and my friends having made it. Instead of crying I went on and made my own systems to sell. I even registered a company to do system designing. That experience taught me that when what you want is not given to you then create your own option.

Don’t get caught up in the emotion of the disappointment, you have to move to become your own boss sometimes.

2. I remember my value

Sometimes your friends will lose your money or damage your assets. I have been disappointed on several occasions where people make promises but lose the money that you would have given them. Sometimes it can be USD 4,000 or just USD 10 but what keeps me moving is that my personal value as a person is more then just money. Yes, it is disappointing but I always remember that given enough time I can recover the lost money.

My value is more than the moment when money goes or people take away what means a lot to me.

3. Left Alone but I am not useless

There is always light despite whatever the dark times say

Sometimes the very people that you are relying on will disappoint you and leave you alone. Just when you think we are in this together and that everything will work out your partners can disappear. You can either cry or you can remember that you are alone but not useless. As one person you can still change the world.

You don’t always need company in order to achieve what you need to. STAND UP AND COUNT YOURSELF. One is still a force and a numeral in any count.

 4. Focus on what needs to be done

When disappointed, it is not time to abandon what you are doing. You have to carry on. I have learned that life will give you curve balls, where for example, you are passed over a promotion, which is exactly what happened to me sometime time ago, it does not mean lay down your tools and sulk, it just means “do what you have to do”. If you stop functioning your greatest disappointment will be the future regrets that you will have.

Focus on what needs to be done. Get up, shake of the dust and move on to the next thing you want to achieve.

As an author and Blogger I have been disappointed by different people and different situations or circumstances, but when I look back at the effort and the amount of books or articles I have written, am sure glad am still writing.
