5 Reasons to Pace yourself to success

Estimated read time 3 min read

No one starts a marathon in full force, sprinting as if the finish line is just around the corner. The prize for finishing a marathon is the finishing not the rewards that people get. Success is like a marathon, it is a race in which you are tested for different things. Only when you pass these things does success feel like prize.

1. It’s Endurance and not a Sprint

The first reason why you must pace yourself appropriately is because it is not a sprint, it is an endurance race. Many may enter the race but few finish if they are not well trained to be able to last the distance. The distance itself takes its toll not only on the body but also on the mind. The temptation to quit will also be high, after all, the finish line is not so visible, but if you are willing to stay the course and endure then the finish line will become visible in your mind.

2. Never get lost in the competition

With hundreds of people in the race, it is easy to forget how to pace yourself and try to run the race to be first or to be ahead of someone. Success is not really about competition it is abut fulfilling a target that you set. When you understand your target then you will understand and make plans with regard to the time you will take. So if you have practiced and your practice time is one hour then pace yourself to achieve that. If the winning time from last year was 40 minutes then practice to pace yourself to achieve 39 minutes and who knows, that might be the winning time. Your greatest competitor is the standard that you set.

3. Hydrate yourself

Every marathon takes a lot from anyone who gets into it. You will need fluids  as you will lose fluids, so it is good to be prepared to take one or two fluids as you run the course. Success is not an overnight thing, you will lose some of your investment, you will be disappointed, sometimes you will feel so close to the finish line but still far from the end of the race. You need to find ways to hydrate yourself so that you can succeed in what you do. Your hydration must be directly proportional to your pace. Never overdo your timeouts, you might forfeit the race to success.

4. Have the right expectations

Every marathon has its completion time. Don’t push yourself beyond what you have trained for. You cannot all of a sudden expect to dominate the marathon if you are not in shape to pace yourself for the endurance that is needed. Your expectations must be correct otherwise you will only exhaust yourself.

5. Success is just training that has a stage and a reward

The fastest runners already run the world records in their private training sessions, and the best goal scorers already score amazing goals in training.

You are termed a success when you are able to repeat the private performance on the world stage. Most people think success happens overnight, there is no such thing. Success is just training that has a stage and a reward. You must have practiced and achieved the same before you can try it out. Yes the competitor can add some inspiration and more determination once you are in the race but the added performance is never more than 5% of what you already achieve in training.
