5 Signs of a Toxic Environment

Estimated read time 5 min read

Back aches, stomach aches, stiff neck, general tiredness, lost appetite, huge appetite, headaches are all signs of stress and in some cases caused by a toxic environment. A toxic environment is one which poisons your growth and prohibits you from achieving anything of real substance. Before you know it, time is gone and you left with nothing but just regret with no evidence of your own potential. Many people are trapped in toxic environments and may not realize and may even think it is part of everyday life. So they find ways to explain it all away so that they can continue into the next day or find some comfort on how they overcome the daily routines.

1. Creativity is not allowed

The human mind is an intricate, creative and innovate part of the human make up. The average brain for an adult has over 100 billion cells, can do millions of calculations, store countless images and do many wondrous things. By design the brain is meant for creativity and innovation. It can be seen as a child from a toddler age that even without much teaching, kids find ways to improvise; they are curious and want to do so many things. A child’s joy is in figuring things out, even if it is destroying your TV or laptop but that inquisitiveness is what makes us human, makes us creative and innovative.

When an environment does not allow you to be creative or to come up with new inventions or try out some of your ideas to improve a situation then rest assured you might be in a toxic environment. You will become dull and unimaginative in the way you do things if you stay there for too long.

2. Creativity is allowed for cutting corners

The opposite of not allowing for creativity is allowing for creativity for the wrongs things. If you train your mind to always look for the shortcut then you are doing your mind an injustice and will not be happy for long. The brain has many different combinations  that it can try, in other words when you go the full circle of solving issues you fire up new areas of your mind and discover more skills that you were probably suppressing. However if you are always being encouraged to do things in the shortcut way, you are teaching your mind to be lazy and not to think beyond the obvious. Such a toxic environment may appear exciting at the beginning but in the end your growth as a human being is stunted by the love of the short cut.

3. Mistrust and Paranoia

A toxic environment can be one in which there is no trust in your ability as a person or in your skills no matter how skilled you are. For example you might be the best accountant in the company, but no one wants to listen to your suggestions on how to use the current company cash flow. You are not allowed to make decisions on how best to use the money that is available to the company. At the end, mistrust and paranoia are all you get in your job, function or social relationships. Such a place will make you depressed, and sooner than later you will become so negative about everything else  that it spills over to your other environments. If you are in such an environment, start making plans and leave such an environment, you don’t need it.

4. Bribery

A toxic environment can be one that continuously bribes you with one thing or the other. The reasons for the bribe is to make you remain compromised so that you continuously keep supporting the status quo of that environment. The more you take the gifts that are given to you, the more you want to reciprocate in one way or the other. You never really become your own person, you are always subject to the other person’s will. The toxic levels are high because you substance as a person or individual is changed and you no longer function according to your progress but you function to someone else progress.

5. Everything is Political

Politics is part of life but when you are constantly asked to choose a side in every battle then you are in political environment. Where you need to watch what you suggest, you cannot suggest things that are different from the way of thinking of that organization. Political environments are toxic in that they suck all your energy, force you to second guess yourself, you lose all your confidence and trust of the world. You start suspecting everyone and sooner than later feel there is always need to belong to a group.

Leave the toxicity

The more you stay the more you become something you don’t want. Bad energy kills your potential to unlock your success. You must always be progressive not negative. Make a plan today not tomorrow if you want to leave such environment.
